1. Why should I take a class with Rose?

Dance is one of the best ways to uplift your spirit and get in a good workout while actually enjoying it!  Middle Eastern Dance specifically is one of the most invigorating dances and very addictive once you give it a try, as the technique is very buildable for any level of dancer -- from the baby beginner to the seasoned, advanced dancer.  Rose relies on her extensive dance training and performance & teaching experience to create an inspiring learning environment for her students, focusing on cultural authenticity, artistry, and the joy of dancing!  To learn more about Rose's background in dance, click here.

2. What styles of dance does Rose teach?

Though Rose primarily teaches Egyptian & Lebanese Raqs Sharqi (aka “Belly Dance”), her technical skills are underpinned by decades of training in ballet, jazz, tap, modern dance, and a variety of folkloric dances, as well as somatic practices intended to awaken internal awareness, including movement improvisation, Pilates, and yoga. Rose has taught multiple styles of dance to students of all ages and genders for over 20 years in a variety of settings.
 

Here are the styles of Middle Eastern Dance Rose currently teaches:

  • Raqs Sharqi, aka “Belly Dance,” (primarily Egyptian & Lebanese) & related dances:

    • Saidi Raqs Assaya (Upper Egyptian cane dance)

    • Baladi (traditional Egyptian style)

    • prop work: veil, fan veils, double-veil, Isis wings, etc.

    • Turkish floorwork (splits, back bends, etc.)

    • Raqs Al Shamadan (candelabra headpiece dance)

    • dancing with finger cymbals (sagat/zills) to Arabic rhythms

  • Dabke: دبكة‎‎ - folkloric line dance of the Levant (Lebanon/Palestine/Syria/Jordan)

  • Iraqi Kawliya dance (hair figure 8s & circles included)

  • Khaleeji (Arabian Gulf / Saudi) dance

 

Rose’s Middle Eastern Dance classes incorporate:

  • basic dance technique (ballet basics, posture, weight-shifting, body awareness)

  • dance fitness & conditioning (Pilates-based abdominal /core-strengthening exercises)

  • choreography, as well as improvisation for interested students

  • lots more!



 

3. Do I need prior dance experience to take Rose’s classes?No! No prior dance training required. If you have never taken a dance class before, you are welcome to take private lessons with Rose, and/or join her weekly group classes – Rose’s current class schedule can be found here.

 

 

4. When do Rose’s weekly group classes take place?

5. Where does Rose teach class?

Rose primarily teaches at dance studios within the City of Chicago, but is also willing to travel to teach.

6. How do I sign up / pay for classes?

8. Does Rose teach private (1-on-1) lessons?

Yes! Rose offers private lessons, as well as semi-private (2 students) lessons. For more information on private lessons, please visit the Private Lessons page.

9. Will Rose travel to teach a private lesson or group class?

Yes! Though Rose primarily teaches private lessons and group classes in the City of Chicago, she is also willing to travel to a studio of your choosing (or to your home), depending.  For more information on private lessons, please visit the Private Lessons page, or request a quote here.

 

10. How often do I need to attend private lessons?  Weekly? Monthly?

This depends on your particular needs and preferences, though in general, Rose recommends private lessons on a weekly basis. If this is not an option for your schedule, Rose can teach private lessons on a monthlybiweekly, or semi-weekly basis, if preferred. 11. What do I wear to class?

  • For Raqs Sharqi (aka “Belly Dance”) class:

Please wear a form-fitting top with leggings so Rose can assess your alignment and knee positioning.

No long skirts or baggy pants.

Feel free to dance barefoot or in dance slippers/socks (optional) – no need to bare your belly!

Hip scarves are optional.

  • For Dabke (folkloric line dance of the Levant, not Belly Dance) class:

Clean athletic shoes / dance sneakers are recommended, as this dance involves a lot of jumping & athleticism.

 

12. How do I book Rose to teach a group class at my private event (bachelorette party, children’s birthday party, dance festival, etc.)?

13. What ages/genders of students does Rose teach?

Rose teaches all ages and genders of students! Rose has over 20 years of teaching experience, including working with children ages 3 and up, as well as the elderly, and everyone in between. Rose also welcomes students of all gender expressions to her classes.

Rose’s weekly group classes are generally for students age 18+, but if you would like Rose to teach a children’s class or other specialized class for your special event, please request a quote here, or call/text 312.248.4828 (if no answer, please leave detailed voicemail).
